Go to www.sustainablehomeherveybay.qld.gov.au to see detailed information and floor plans for Sustainable Home Hervey Bay.

The Council has built the  ‘Sustainable Home Hervey Bay’ project as part of a statewide initiative promoting the benefits of sustainable housing to homeowners and their communities.

The sustainable home will be opened to the public for a six to twelve month period and will demonstrate the principles of best practice sustainable housing, allowing the community to inspect the design features first hand.

By applying the design principles displayed in the sustainable home, home builders and renovators can learn how to build homes that work for them, making them more comfortable, more accessible, more liveable and more secure for people at all stages of their lives. Sustainable housing will save homeowners money in the long-term through their water and power bills.

The Sustainable Homes initiative is a national first involving the State Government, local councils and industry across Queensland working together to build a series of homes demonstrating Smart Housing principles which are socially, environmentally and economically sustainable.

For further information on the 'Sustainable Home Hervey Bay' project, please contact Andy Gaze, Manager City Health and Protection, on 07 4197 4244 or check out the links at the bottom of this page.

Ten tips for a sustainable home
1. Use the climate in your region to naturally heat and cool your home by considering orientation, ventilation, insulation and shading.
2. Install solar hot water, natural gas or an electric heat pump to lower your heating bill.
3. Living areas and at least one bedroom and toilet should be accessible from the entry level of the house to accommodate our changing needs.
4. Design floors and showers to be step-free and use slip-resistant floor surfaces.
5. Reduce water use by installing water efficient appliances and consider water tanks for gardens and flushing toilets.
6. Ensure your house addresses the street with a house number that is easy to read, good external lighting and a well-defined driveway and pedestrian entries.
7. Design your home to have easy surveillance of play areas for safety and surveillance of the street for security.
8. Reduce the repair and ongoing maintenance costs of your home by using low maintenance materials.
9. Ensure good indoor air quality by avoiding materials that contain volatile organic compounds that can cause irritation and allergies.
10. Ensure play and entertainment areas are covered and have a good relationship to indoor spaces.
