PEST
MANAGEMENT
A pest is any animal or plant that has an adverse economic,
environmental or social impact on a particular place. Weeds and pest animals
affect the lives of all Queenslanders. They degrade our natural resources,
damage precious remnant vegetation, compromise biodiversity and interfere with
human health and recreation.
The Land Protection (Pest and Stock Route Management) Act 2002 and the Land Protection (Pest and Stock Route Management) Regulation 2003 provide legislative measures for the management of weeds and pest animals and stock routes throughout Queensland.
Pest Management
Plan
Pest management is changing in Hervey Bay in conjunction with the
changes in demographics. The number of families managing properties for primary
production is decreasing with an increase in new urban and rural residents. This
change increases the need for an effective council wide educational program in
pest management. The impact of environmental weeds many being escaped garden
plants is likely to increase. The Pest Management Plan focuses on terrestrial
pests and freshwater aquatic species. Marine species are not included in this
plan.
The presence of World Heritage and RAMSAR listed areas within the Council boundaries, increases the need for all stakeholders to work co-operatively to limit the degrading impact of pest species on these significant sites.
Effective pest management in Hervey Bay will be the result of coordinated efforts.
